Banning Heritage Day to Re-Create L.A. History

Friends of Banning Park and the historic Banning Residence Museum plan to show museum visitors what life in Wilmington was like in the late 19th century at the third annual Banning Heritage Day today. The museum will offer free tours of the restored 1864 Victorian mansion built by Gen. Phineas Banning, founder of the first transportation network in Southern California and creator of what is now the Port of Los Angeles.

A working stagecoach barn with vintage horse-drawn vehicles and a 1880s schoolhouse will also be open for tours.

Traditional blacksmiths, woodcarvers and quilters will demonstrate their trades and the museum will also offer an old-fashioned ice cream social.

“Banning Heritage Day provides visitors a glimpse of life in the early rancho days of Los Angeles,” said museum Director Jeffrey Herr.

“The Banning Museum is pleased to provide an opportunity for the community to be part of Gen. Banning’s heritage.”

Banning Heritage Day will take place from noon to 4 p.m. today at the museum, 401 East M. St. For information: (310) 548-7777.
