Proposal Would Set Fees for TV, Film Shoots

The filming location for such recent movies as Tom Hanks’ “That Thing You Do!” and “Austin Powers,” starring Mike Myers, the city is considering special fees for film and TV crews interested in shooting here.

Municipal administrators now set rates on a case-by-case basis, using fee structures for business licenses and municipal services such as police and fire protection, said Ann C. Gyben, assistant to the city manager.

The new provisions, up for City Council approval Monday, would set fees for movie and TV activities.

Under the proposal, filmmakers would be charged a $75 application fee to cover a review by the city manager’s office, risk management personnel and code enforcement.

Business permits, which are currently required, cost about $200 each.

Under the proposal, location shoots on public property would cost $40 an hour.

Additional fees would be levied to cover police and fire services.

The fees would only apply to filming on city-owned property such as streets, alleys and parking lots.

Private property owners would still negotiate prices with entertainment industry personnel.
