CASTAIC — Four inmates suffered minor injuries early Saturday in a racially motivated brawl at the Pitchess Detention Center, according to authorities.
The fight, involving about 30 African American and Latino inmates, broke out about 6:30 a.m. in a dormitory housing 55 inmates, said Deputy Michael Irving of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The inmates used their feet and fists in the fight, according to authorities. The brawl lasted about a minute before deputies stopped it by using a nonlethal sting grenade.
Three of the inmates were treated at the facility’s clinic and a fourth was taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center’s jail ward for X-rays of his jaw, Irving said.
No deputies were hurt.
The cause of the fight was not known and the incident remained under investigation, Irving said.
