Returning Taxes

Your May 9 editorial, “Localities See Some Hope for Justice on Property Taxes,” was right on target.
For too long California’s cities have been unable to provide municipal services because property tax dollars were shifted away from cities and counties as part of the 1992-93 and 1993-94 state budgets. Cities alone have lost over $2 billion in general property tax revenue over the past six years. As a result, cities have been unable to provide additional police and fire personnel, open closed libraries, or maintain or build new parks and recreation centers that our children and senior citizens depend on.
The members of the League of California Cities will fight to assure that SB 880, AB 95 and ACA 4, which will restore essential funding to local governments, are passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor.
