* Last year: Mark Brooks won with a five-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff with Kenny Perry. Brooks closed with a two-under 70 and Perry shot a 68 for 11-under 277 totals at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky.
* Last weekend: Fiji’s Vijay Singh won the Buick Open at Grand Blanc, Mich., closing with a six-under 66 for a four-stroke victory over six players. Singh had a 15-under 273 total.

* Tiger Woods earned $43,500 for an eighth-place tie in the Buick Open to break the PGA Tour’s single-season money record. He has $1,821,895 in 15 starts. Tom Lehman set the previous mark of $1,780,159 in 22 events last year. Woods has six victories and $2,611,789 in earnings in 23 PGA Tour events as a pro.
* Fuzzy Zoeller won the 1984 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, beating Greg Norman, 67-75, in an 18-hole playoff.
* Hale Irwin’s seven-over total in the 1974 U.S. Open at Winged Foot was the highest winning mark in a major since the 1963 U.S. Open. The 1974 scoring average of 76.99 was highest in relation to par in a major since 1958 U.S. Open.
* The A.W. Tillinghast-designed course also was the site of two other U.S. Opens, with Bobby Jones winning in 1929 and Billy Casper in 1959.
* Jack Nicklaus, 57, a five-time winner, is making his 152nd consecutive start in a major championship for which he has been eligible. He is trying to make the cut in all four majors for the first time since 1991. . . . The tournament is the final event in the points race for the 10 automatic berths on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
* The winner receives a 10-year tour exemption. The top eight qualify for the Masters and the top 15 and ties earn spots in the 1998 tournament at Sahalee in Redmond, Wash.
* Bruce Zabriski won the PGA Club Professional Championship at Pinehurst, N.C., to top the 25 qualifiers. Zabriski is an assistant pro at nearby Westchester Country Club, site of the PGA Tour’s Buick Classic.
* The PGA was contested at match play from 1916 to 1957.
