A listing of all girls’ basketball tournaments opening this week that include county teams:
La Quinta Tournament
* Site: La Quinta
* Dates: Pool play games, today through Dec. 18; Championship, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
* County teams entered: Savanna, Dana Hills, Edison, Saddleback, La Quinta, University, Santiago.
* 1996 champion: Troy, a 40-35 winner over Esperanza.
* Outlook: Edison is expected to do well in this eight-team format. Any competition should come from University or Dana Hills.
Gary Raya Co-ed Classic
* Site: El Dorado HS and Esperanza HS
* Dates: Pool play games, today through Dec. 19; Championship, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.
* County teams entered: Fullerton, El Dorado, Aliso Niguel, Valencia.
* Outlook: Four local teams battle four from outside the county in this 11th annual event, which is named after the Golden Hawks’ coach who died in 1995. El Dorado stands a good chance of winning the tournament.
ABC Christmas Classic
* Site: Lakewood Artesia HS and Brethren Christian HS
* Dates: Bracketed games, Dec. 16-20 and Dec. 22; Championship, Dec. 23 at 8 p.m.
* County teams entered: Cypress, Laguna Beach, Pacifica, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Marina, Kennedy, Ocean View, Calvary Chapel, Newport Harbor, Garden Grove.
* 1996 champion: Ocean View, a 59-35 winner over Pasadena Muir.
* Outlook: This is the largest tournament in the area with 32 teams involved. Some top county teams, such as Marina, Calvary Chapel and Ocean View, will get a chance to play some good competition from outside the area.
Orange Lutheran Tournament
* Site: Orange Lutheran HS
* Dates: Round-robin games, Dec. 18-20; Champion determined by points
* County teams entered: Orange Lutheran, Connelly, Whittier Christian.
* 1996 champion: Riverside Woodcrest Christian, a round-robin winner over Orange.
* Outlook: A good chance to take a look at some of the lowerlevel competition. Pasadena Poly rounds out this four-team round-robin format.
