Brea Olinda Gets Successor for School Board

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Trustees of the Brea Olinda Unified School District on Tuesday selected businessman James R. “Budd” Reed to fill the seat of a member who resigned in June.

The board chose Reed from six candidates to complete the 1 1/2 years remaining on the term of former trustee Carol L. Norum, board member Kenneth A. Kegel said.

Reed, who is president and CEO of Standard Industries in La Mirada, particularly impressed the board with his professional background and community involvement, Kegel said.

“He brings a business background, which we thought was important to balance the educator points of view on the board,” Kegel said. “Also, he’s been involved in the district and has kids at many levels in the public schools.”

The immediate task ahead for Reed will be participation in the development of the district’s strategic plan. The plan is to address all aspects of education, from curriculum and staff development to class size reduction, diversity issues and capital projects.
