Saugus High freshman football Coach Jim Phillips has resigned after having his players lie down on the field with the Centurions trailing Valencia, 51-6, in a game Thursday.
“He takes full responsibility and knows he was wrong,” Saugus varsity Coach Ron Hilton said.
Phillips, who was recently inducted into the Saugus Hall of Fame for coaches, would have faced suspension from the Southern Section.
The Saugus freshman team has one game remaining. Hilton said assistant coaches will run the team.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Eleazar Hernandez, the 1996 state junior college men’s cross-country champion for Moorpark College, will attend Texas San Antonio next fall.
The 1995 graduate of Camarillo High has completed the requirements for his Associate of Arts degree at Moorpark, but he will remain at the school until the end of next track season to help Coach Doni Green train the Raiders’ distance runners.
VOLLEYBALL
Nancy Ma, a standout outside hitter for the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team, underwent surgery Friday at Encino Hospital to repair torn ligaments and cartilage in her right knee.
Ma, a junior from China, was injured in a match against Weber State on Sept. 27. Ma’s rehabilitation is expected to take seven to nine months.
