My wife and I read with great interest Karin Dominello’s “Classical Road Scholars” (Aug. 17), as we visited some of the same area in Germany.

We would like to share our experience at the Wartburg. Like Dominello, my ability to speak German is limited, and while following the tour through the castle, the guide was sensitive to the fact I was having difficulty following her commentary. She very quietly called me aside and told me that she had a guide printed in English. It was a simple, kind act.

The Wartburg was probably the most interesting historic site we visited--not only because of its antiquity and its connection with Martin Luther and Lucas Cranach, but also its role as the home of St. Elizabeth, who was betrothed to her husband at age 4 and lived at the Wartburg. Her husband went off to the Crusades, and Elizabeth championed the cause of the sick and the poor, for which she was later canonized.
