Contract for Traffic Signal Awarded in Wake of Crash
Whittier will install a traffic signal at the intersection where a speeding car hit and critically injured a crossing guard.
The City Council awarded an $80,000 contract for a signal at Norwalk Boulevard and Orange Grove Avenue near Orange Grove Elementary School.
The signal had been approved by the City Council in 1995 but Caltrans funding was not available until this summer, City Councilman Bob Henderson said.
“If Caltrans can speed the process we can put in a signal in three weeks,” Henderson said. “Otherwise we have instructed the city manager to use movable stop lights until the signal is ready.”
Mary Bartleski, 65, remained in critical condition Monday at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, where she was airlifted with massive head injuries after she was hit Sept. 22.
