Council OKs $24,500 for Library Plans
The Ventura City Council voted Monday night to set aside $24,500 to draw up design plans for a library on the ground floor of the soon-to-be refurbished Casa De Anza building on the Avenue.
Federal grants would pay for the new library plans, which are part of a proposal to move the current Avenue Library to a larger location.
The decision to move ahead with the design plans is an important step toward expanding the tiny, cramped west side library and moving it to a more central location on Ventura Avenue.
Residents have called the crumbling brick Casa de Anza at 606 N. Ventura Ave. the most prominent building on the Avenue. The owner of the building will soon begin renovating it to provide low-income apartments. The first floor has been reserved for a project to benefit the community.
Earlier this month, the Library Advisory Committee voted unanimously to endorse the Casa De Anza as the future site of the Avenue Library.
The design plans will help determine whether the space can actually be used.
