“Red Zone” Scoring Is Being Emphasized

The good news is that Chris Sailer has kicked eight field goals in a row for UCLA.

The bad news is that he has attempted eight field goals.

“Too many field goals,” Bruin Coach Bob Toledo said Monday.

UCLA has scored on 22 of its 25 trips inside opponents’ 20-yard-line, and 17 of those scores have been touchdowns.

“As a coach, you’d like to see it 80%,” Toledo said.

With that in mind, emphasis in practice has been on plays inside the “red zone,” and that emphasis will be increased this week in preparation for Saturday’s game against Houston.

The idea that the 22nd-ranked Bruins could be looking past Houston (1-3) was quickly scotched when Toledo said the physical nature of UCLA practices would continue.

“We’re always seeking the perfect game,” he said. “We haven’t played a perfect game. Until we play a perfect game, we as coaches will stay on them.”

In winning two games in a row, the Bruins have scored 106 points and given up 30.

But neither game qualified as perfect, according to Toledo, who said he has never seen a perfect game. “Not in 30 years of coaching,” he said. “And it will never happen.”

Cornerback Damian Allen, beaten Saturday for a touchdown by Arizona’s Rodney Williams, missed a signal from the sideline before the play and believed he had help on the coverage.

He didn’t, and Jason Bell played the position for most of the second half, replacing Allen, who had replaced Javelin Guidry, whose knee had stiffened.

Cornerback Aaron Roques has been slow in recovering from a shoulder injury and probably will miss Saturday’s game, leaving freshman Marques Anderson as the starter.
