Shoreline Cleanup Could Hit Rain Delay
The anticipated El Nino rains could slow down cleanup of the city’s shoreline areas that for the past 10 days have been covered with large amounts of tangled wood, bamboo and other trash.
A crew of four has been working since last weekend cleaning up the debris that could fill 120 industrial-size dumpsters when the work is completed, said Larry Neishi, beach maintenance supervisor.
“This is very strange to be getting this amount of debris at this time of the year,” he said. “We normally get this problem with the first rains, but it hasn’t happened until now.”
Tree limbs, tires and an assortment of trash have covered large portions of a 3.5-mile beach area that runs from Beach Boulevard to just north of Goldenwest Avenue, Neishi said.
The debris at points has been 2 1/2 feet deep and extends about 20 yards from the shoreline.
Officials hope to have the cleanup done by the weekend but fear more rains could add to the mess and further delay the process.
