Rep. Barr Is Accused of Breaking Campaign Law
WASHINGTON — Rep. Bob Barr’s 1996 campaign collected nearly $55,000 in contributions that exceeded the legal limits, Federal Election Commission auditors said.
The audit also found that the Georgia Republican’s campaign committee misstated its financial activity, failed to properly disclose political action committee donations and did not make timely disclosures of all large contributions received just before the primary and general election.
Barr, who called last year for an impeachment inquiry into President Clinton’s fund-raising in the 1996 presidential campaign, referred questions about the audit to lawyer Ben Ginsberg, who said the campaign had corrected some mistakes it made because it was unfamiliar with technicalities in the law.
