Man Ran From Scene of Crash, Police Say
An Oxnard man is in jail on suspicion of drunk driving and trying to run from an accident.
Jose Alvarez, 22, lost control of his Honda Accord about 9:15 p.m. Monday and crashed into a low wall on the right side of the Ventura Freeway near the Johnson Drive exit, said Officer Dave Cockrill, a California Highway Patrol spokesman.
Alvarez was apparently unhurt and staggered out of his wrecked car, Cockrill said. Several drivers pulled over to help him, but Alvarez started moving away from his car, Cockrill said.
When CHP Officer Mike Condon arrived, the other drivers pointed at Alvarez as he was trying to climb over a wall, Cockrill said.
Alvarez went over the wall and ran into a public storage area and Condon chased him, Cockrill said. Condon spotted Alvarez running and called for him to stop. Alvarez stopped and was arrested.
He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license and running from the scene of an accident, Cockrill said.
