City, District Plan Gym for Thurston School
Officials are discussing plans to build a gymnasium for student and community activities at Thurston Middle School.
A gym would allow basketball, volleyball and soccer games, Pat Barry, the city’s director of community services, said. The city’s two gyms are at Laguna Beach High School and at the Boys and Girls Club, but both are booked to capacity.
Having a gym at Thurston would expand physical education at the school and allow more opportunities for students during inclement weather, said Principal Ron Lamotte.
Officials said that cost estimates have yet to be determined. City and school officials are considering sharing costs.
The Recreation Commission, which discussed the idea at its meeting Monday, is asking for public comment at its next meeting, May 4.
