Canyon Gets Jump on Hart, 9-8
Canyon High built a big lead, then held on to upset Hart, 9-8, in a Foothill League baseball game Tuesday at Hart.
The Indians (16-2, 5-1), The Times’ top-ranked team in the region, fell behind 6-0 after two innings and 7-2 after four. They made it close, scoring four runs in fifth and two in the seventh on Tim Hutting’s two-out double.
Hutting was out on Ted Atler’s relay throw to Mike Kennedy trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
Josh Miramontez had a single and double, scored two runs and drove in two for Canyon (5-10, 2-4).
San Fernando 3, Taft 2--Edgar Esqueda singled home Fernando Rubalcava with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and also scattered eight hits and struck out nine for the Tigers (5-10, 3-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft. Esqueda, normally a catcher, is 2-0 as a pitcher this season.
Justin Wade pitched all nine innings for Taft (5-10, 2-4), allowing 13 hits while striking out six.
Chatsworth 7, Granada Hills 2--Mike Kunes struck out six, walked none and threw a five-hitter and sophomores Matt Cassel and Matt Fisher each hit home runs to power host Chatsworth (17-2, 6-1) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory.
Kunes also had two hits for the Chancellors, who scored four runs in the first inning, keyed by Tom Morefield’s two-run double. David Teraoka had two hits for Granada Hills (6-13, 2-5).
Cleveland 7, Birmingham 0--Javier Gomez and Max Santillan combined on a two-hitter to help the host Cavaliers (10-4, 3-3) to a Northwest Valley Conference win.
Harvard-Westlake 1, Campbell Hall 0--Matt Berkson’s home run was the only hit allowed by Michael Frost, but it was the difference in a nonleague game at Campbell Hall.
Frost (3-3), a sophomore right-hander, was perfect through four innings.
Royal 18, Artesia 1--Brian Lipman was four for four, including his fifth and sixth home runs, and had five RBIs for the Highlanders (10-4) in a pool-play game of the Corona del Mar tournament called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Camarillo 9, Laguna Beach 2--Garrett Valencia struck out nine and allowed one hit in six innings and Eric Foster contributed a two-run single during a six-run second inning as Camarillo (12-3) won a round-robin game of the Corona del Mar tournament.
Righetti 6, Notre Dame 5--The Knights (10-4-1) left 10 runners on base and let a 5-2 fifth-inning lead get away in a semifinal game at the Atascadero/Paso Robles tournament.
Chris Morell had four hits and scored two runs for the Knights.
Crespi 10, Glenn 2--Joel Garcia drove in two runs with three hits and Christian Cardenas drove in two runs with two hits and Andy Campanella had a two-run home run and a single for Crespi (13-3-1) in a St. Paul tournament semifinal game at Valley College.
Hueneme 10, Santa Barbara 8--Robert Avila was three for three with three RBIs, including a two-run single to spark a six-run fifth inning for Hueneme in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara.
Fillmore 10, Providence 0--Martin Morales threw a two-hitter and struck out three for Fillmore in a nonleague game at Fillmore (7-2) that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Crescenta Valley 9, Arcadia 4--Eric Snyder had three hits, including a three-run triple and Mark McCauley had two hits including a run-scoring double for Crescenta Valley (10-1-1, 4-1-1) in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.
Saugus 9, Valencia 5--Luke Miller had two hits, including a three-run home run, and Ron Clark added two hits and two RBIs in for Saugus (5-11, 2-4) in a Foothill League game at Saugus.
Viewpoint 6, Windward 0--Chaney Sheffield threw a no-hitter, struck out nine and hit his sixth home run, breaking Viewpoint’s single-season home run mark as the Patriots (8-3, 5-0) won their 40th consecutive league game and moved into sole possession of first place in the Liberty League at Windward.
Santa Clara 7, Moorpark 6--Ryan Baker scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the 11th inning for the Saints (6-6, 3-4) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
L.A. Baptist 1, Mission Prep 0--Tim Feirfeil’s two-out single to left field scored pinch-runner Joey Chavez with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of a first-round Templeton tournament game at Vineyard Athletic Park.
Oak Park 1, La Puente 0--David Wurth scored from second on a single by Nate Elder in the eighth inning of a Rowland tournament game at Ayala High.
St. Bonaventure 12, Bishop Diego 2--Pat Devericks and David Chaparro each had two hits and four RBIs for St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League game at Bishop Diego.
