Spike Lee’s “He Got Game” stars Denzel Washington, left, as a convict whose chance of freedom lies in persuading his estranged son (Ray Allen), the No. 1 prep basketball player in America, to sign with Big State--the governor’s alma mater. The film opens Friday in general release.

Stephen Fry has the title role in “Wilde,” based on Richard Ellmann’s acclaimed biography of Oscar Wilde. Jude Law plays Lord Alfred Douglas, whose affair with Wilde wrecked the life and career of London’s most brilliant playwright. The film opens Friday at selected theaters.

The Acting Company presents “Love’s Fire: Fresh Numbers by Seven American Playwrights” (a stellar lineup of Eric Bogosian, William Finn, John Guare, Tony Kushner, Marsha Norman, Ntozake Shange and Wendy Wasserstein) on Thursday at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Showcasing local organ star Frederick Swann, the Los Angeles Master Chorale takes a field trip today from the Music Center downtown to First United Methodist Church in Pasadena for choral works and solo pieces, including the world premiere of Jean Langlais’ “Praise the Lord, All Ye Nations.”

Andre Rieu brings his Johann Strauss Orchestra to the Universal Amphitheatre Wednesday for an evening of schmaltz and waltzes. The popular Dutch violinist/conductor--with three CDs currently on the classical charts--is a staple of concert programming on public television.

POP MUSIC

Some 300,000 fans of Latin music are expected to fill the streets of downtown Los Angeles today for the ninth Fiesta Broadway celebration. Among the more than two dozen pop, mariachi, salsa and Tex-Mex acts scheduled: Chayanne, above; La Mafia; Amanda Miguel; Nydia Rojas; and Grupo Niche.

JAZZ

Jack Sheldon, a superior trumpeter, underrated singer and longtime player on the L.A. scene, has a wicked sense of humor. His monologues (no matter how tasteless!) are frequently hilarious. Tonight and each Sunday night at Chadney’s in Burbank, he teams up with pianist Ross Tompkins.

Though it rewrites Russian history, the kiddies will enjoy “Anastasia,” a lively animated musical from Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. Meg Ryan is the voice of the plucky heroine who may or may not be the daughter of Nicholas and Alexandra. The video arrives in stores on Tuesday.
