Minimum Wage
Re “Minimum-Wage Overkill,” editorial, April 24: I was startled to read that “sound economic reasoning” mandates that we be opposed to raising the minimum wage to $6.75 an hour. If we think about it, free labor would be the cheapest way to go and very sound economically. Unfortunately, a Republican president did away with slavery a long time ago.

* The Times is to be commended for opposing the attempt by Assembly Democrats to raise the minimum wage. When a commodity is priced higher than the market will bear, a surplus in that item results. If the commodity is the California worker, that surplus is called “unemployment.”
Assembly members would be wise to consider that raising the minimum wage will only convert into political advantage if minimum wage employees continue to work.
