Stern-Style Interviews

I had an inspiration after reading Paul Brownfield’s lavish tribute to Howard Stern (“The King of Raunch, Reconsidered,” July 27), in which he praised Stern for being so irreverent and iconoclastic, for asking David Duchovny about his penis size and Warren Beatty, “Do you move your bowels generally in the morning or in the evening?”

If this kind of questioning is so “entertaining” and “refreshing,” why doesn’t the Los Angeles Times encourage all of its reporters to fire queries like that at sports greats, politicians, clergymen, admirals and Nobel Prize winners?

Perhaps Brownfield would consider writing a weekly column, in which he asks such questions of prominent figures of the day. For his very first column, he might ask himself these questions (and several others that I can suggest) and then answer them for us in detail.

Comparing Howard Stern to Walter Winchell makes about as much sense as comparing Benito Mussolini to Martin Van Buren (hey, they were both in the same game, leaders of a major country).

You have wasted valuable columns on a person whose sole purpose is to wallow in scatology.
