The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider a recommendation by Supervisor Frank Schilloto nominate Supervisor Judy Mikels to fill a vacancy on the California Coastal Commission.

Schillo said Friday that Mikels has a strong background in planning, a key function of the state panel.

“Judy has some particularly important talents for the Coastal Commission,” Schillo said.

Mikels, whose 4th District stretches from Simi Valley to Las Posas Valley, is in her second term. She is also a small business owner.

If nominated, her name will join a list that includes Ventura Councilman Brian Brennan and Port Hueneme Councilwoman Toni Young, both of whom were selected by a panel of the county’s mayors.

All names to be considered for the position of South Central Coast District representative will be forwarded to Gov. Pete Wilson, who has also asked for nominations from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The coastal district includes the three counties.

Similar panels in the outside counties were also expected to nominate people for the post. Nominations must be made by Aug. 18.

The vacancy on the state panel occurred because Commissioner Tim Staffel, a member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, is resigning since being selected a Superior Court judge by the governor.
