‘Ryan’: More (or Less) Than Reality

I am 30 years old, 10 years older than my grandfather when he fought in World War II in the U.S. Navy. For the first time in my life, thanks to Steven Spielberg, I understand what “Pappaw” went through to protect the freedom of our country and the world.

After seeing “Saving Private Ryan” last night, I realized that I had been given a rare glimpse into my grandfather’s past. God willing, a time that will never be repeated. I have listened to Pappaw tell hundreds of war stories, many times feigning interest, understanding and concern.

In today’s world, the atrocities of war seem distant and unreal. The masterpiece of “Saving Private Ryan,” along with “Schindler’s List,” should be added to all high school curriculum.

It is important that every generation always remember that freedom did not come without a price. Luckily, for me, the price Pappaw paid was not with his life. The next time Pappaw tells a war tale, I will listen with an appreciation and intensity that I have never known. Thank you, Mr. Spielberg, for opening my eyes and allowing me to love my grandfather in a whole new way.

Thank you, Pappaw, for giving me my life. I love you.
