John ‘Jack’ Fitzhugh; World War II Veteran
Ventura resident John “Jack” Fitzhugh died Friday following a lengthy illness. He was 73.
Fitzhugh was born April 13, 1925, in Grand Island, Neb. He had lived in Ventura County for the past 19 years, his family said.
Before his retirement in 1990, Fitzhugh worked as a construction company superintendent. He served in the Army during World War II and was a life member of the VFW’s Walter Chaffee Post No. 1679 and the International Order of Foresters Footprinters, Chapter No. 31, both in Ventura.
Fitzhugh enjoyed spending time with his family and his best friend, Bob Allan of Ventura. He also loved to travel with his wife of 18 years, Marion.
Fitzhugh was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ted Fitzhugh.
In addition to his wife, Fitzhugh is survived by two sons, Terry Fitzhugh of Riverside and Gary Fitzhugh of Corona; a daughter, Shari Hinkle of Arroyo Grande; a brother, Jay Yockey of Riverside, a sister, Maxine Gilbert of Kingman, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. VFW member Steve Davis will officiate. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in Ventura, the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ventura or the VFW’s Walter Chaffee Post No. 1679 Cancer Fund in Ventura.
