Government Blocks Dissident’s Trip

The government blocked pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s latest attempt to travel outside the capital, attributing the action to concerns for her safety. Suu Kyi was headed for Bassein, 100 miles west of Yangon, Myanmar’s capital, to meet with members of her National League for Democracy party when she was stopped at the same roadblock where she was held up last month, government and party sources said. Meanwhile, 18 foreigners, including six Americans, detained for distributing anti-government leaflets were still being held.
