State Report Card : How your school fared in California’s annual report

The state Department of Education released its annual report on how well California’s 863 high schools are doing by various measures. The only notable change is that students appear to be more likely to stay in school, although educators say some of that improvement is due to better record-keeping.

Partial data are reported below. To the right of each category is a column showing change from two years previous. A third column shows how each school ranks, on a percentile basis, against other schools in the state. A percentile rank of 50 means half the schools in the state are doing better in that category.

State officials said that large changes in any category may be the result of errors or incomplete data and should be regarded with caution.

4-year completion: Estimate of the percentage of ninth-graders who will remain in school four years later.

Career-vocational: Rate at which students are enrolled in one or more career or vocational courses.

UC: Percent of 1996 graduates who enrolled in the University of California.

CSU: Percent of 1996 graduates who enrolled in the California State University system.

Community college: Percent of 1996 graduates who enrolled in the state’s community colleges.

SAT/ACT above average: Percent of high school seniors scoring above 1,000 on the two college entrance exams.
