Sandy Brondello scored a season-high 24 points and Lynette Woodard added a season-high 18 as Detroit helped eliminate New York from playoff contention with an 82-68 victory before a franchise-record 16,246 at Auburn Hills, Mich. New York and Charlotte each finished with 18-12 records, but Charlotte won three of four games between the teams to advance via the tiebreaker. Detroit finished with a 17-13 record. . . .
Jennifer Gillom had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Michele Timms sank four free throws in the final 35 seconds as Phoenix held off Sacramento, 71-62, at Phoenix. The Mercury won its last four games and six of its last seven to finish 19-11 and earn the No. 3 seeding in the playoffs. Phoenix will open a best-of-three series at home Saturday against Cleveland. . . .
Andrea Stinson scored 23 points and Charlotte sank 62% of its shots to clinch the No. 4 playoff seeding with a 105-69 victory over Washington before 18,552 at the MCI Center. The Mystics (3-27) finished with the worst record of any team in the WNBA’s two-year history. . . .
The National Basketball Players Assn.’s bid for a union vote by WNBA players was delayed Wednesday when league officials said they were not ready to proceed.
