Education Panel Rejects Proposed School District
County education officials have recommended that the state reject proposals to carve out a new school district in Lakewood.
After the presentation of a county-sponsored report analyzing the proposal, members of the Los Angeles County committee on school district organization voted 9-1 Wednesday to advise the State Board of Education against granting approval to a new district.
Despite what seems to be a setback, Lakewood district proponents took solace in the county’s ruling that a new district would not discriminate against minorities, said Todd Rogers, who heads a committee of activists supporting the creation of a district.
Opponents of the proposal have argued that a Lakewood district would reduce the percentage of white children attending the districts now serving Lakewood.
The proposed district would take chunks from four other school districts: ABC, Bellflower, Paramount and Long Beach. All four districts have opposed the creation of a Lakewood district.
