Teacher in Racial Flap Seeks Transfer

A white teacher accused of racial insensitivity for reading a book titled “Nappy Hair” to her black and Hispanic pupils requested a transfer out of her Brooklyn school district, saying she fears for her life. “I can’t take the fear and wondering every day what might happen,” Ruth Sherman said. Sherman, 27, has not returned to her third-grade class since a school meeting last week at which residents of the city’s Bushwick section yelled racial epithets and profanities at her and threatened her for reading the acclaimed children’s book to her students.
