Bill on Gay Rights Barely Wins Rematch

A gay rights ordinance torpedoed by conservative crusader Anita Bryant in 1977 found new life when officials narrowly approved a law barring discrimination against homosexuals in the workplace and housing. The law passed, 7 to 6, after commissioners in Miami debated it before scores of advocates from both sides. The vote came after more than four hours of public comment, while opponents on their knees prayed outside. Bryant, a singer and former beauty queen, led a widely publicized appeal 21 years ago with her group “Save Our Children.”
