The Catholic Athletic Assn. declined to reconsider its football releaguing proposal Wednesday, rejecting an appeal from Alemany and St. Paul.

The two schools will be forced to switch from the Division III Mission League to the Division I Del Rey League for three years beginning next season.

Alemany and St. Paul can seek an appeal on Jan. 28 at a general meeting of the Southern Section league representatives.

The CAA considered the appeal after Dr. Jerome Porath, superintendent for the Los Angeles Archdiocese, requested the CAA examine concerns over “competitive equity.”

Father James Anguiano, principal at Alemany, said several parents wrote letters to Porath, alleging “liability concerns” if the Indians were placed in Division I. The Del Rey League would include powerhouses Loyola and Bishop Amat.

BASEBALL

Gabe Kapler, former Taft High outfielder who was minor league player of the year in the Detroit Tigers’ organization, will be the featured guest on Valley Sports 2 at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on ESPN2 in the West Valley.

SOCCER

Forwards Holly Roepke and Christina Rasmussen and defender Betsy Fisch of Cal Lutheran were selected to NCAA Division III All-West Region team by the National Soccer Coaches Assn.

Midfielder Alia Khan and defender Jennifer Agostino earned second-team honors for the Regals, and halfback Ashley Scott was a third-team selection.

Erin Croasmun, a graduate of St. Bonaventure High who is a freshman at Ohio Wesleyan, earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honorable mention after posting eight goals and six assists.

Croasmun helped the Bishops (19-3) advance to the championship game of the NCAA Division III Great Lakes regional.

SOFTBALL

Lacy and Brandi Cope of Thousand Oaks High have signed letters of intent with Humboldt State.

VOLLEYBALL

Sherisa Livingston of Wisconsin was selected the Big Ten women’s freshman of the year.

Livingston, a middle blocker who played at Royal High, led the Badgers with a .361 hitting percentage and was second with 3.17 kills and 1.20 blocks per game.

Middle blocker Candace Boller, a sophomore at Loyola Marymount from Hart High, was selected to the All-West Coast Conference second team.
