S. Africa Asked to Hand Over Ex-Leader

Zimbabwe is demanding that South Africa hand over former President Canaan Banana, who fled the country shortly before he was convicted of sodomy and homosexual assault. “We want Banana back. That is our requirement,” a government spokesman said in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital. Banana, who says the charges were politically motivated, met with President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. Banana’s trial began in June, and he was free on bail pending the verdict. Shortly before his conviction last week, he fled.
