Ventura Women Start Fast, 74-44

Kristin De Simone scored 18 points, and Valerie Wiggins had 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead Ventura College to a 74-44 victory over DeAnza in the first round of the Sequoias women’s basketball tournament in Visalia.
Ventura took a 20-2 lead in the first six minutes.
The Pirates will play Sequoias in the quarterfinals at 7 tonight .
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 68, Golden West 48--The Monarchs made 57% of their shots, 28 of 49, in a first-round game of the Orange Coast tournament.
Felix Lang made nine of 15 shots and scored 18 points for Valley (4-5). Tyree Williams was five of seven for 13 points for the Monarchs.
The Master’s 75, High Five America 65--The Mustangs made 11 of 23 three-point shots in a victory in the Lee Fulmer tournament at Redlands.
Joey Penberthy had 23 points and four assists for Master’s, which will play Cal Baptist today at 6 p.m. for the championship.
Joclin Julmist had seven points, 16 rebounds, four assists and five steals for the Mustangs.
Marcus Johnson had 20 points, 13 rebounds and five steals for High Five America.
Mira Costa 80, Canyons 73--Ron Slater and Anthony Ellison each scored 15 points and Charles Madison added 14 but the Cougars (3-5) lost in the Antelope Valley tournament.
Conan Moore had 23 points and six rebounds for the Spartans (2-5), and David Korfman added 22 points and five blocked shots.
Mira Costa outscored Canyons in the second half, 47-31, making 19 of 25 free throws. The Cougars made six of nine free throws in the second half.
