Thousands Mourn Slain Sikh Publisher

SURREY, Canada — Police searched for bombs as about 2,000 people gathered at a funeral home to mourn the shooting death of a moderate Sikh newspaper publisher who had been critical of Sikh hard-liners.
Tara Singh Hayer was publisher of the Indo-Canadian Times, the largest-circulation Punjabi-language newspaper in North America. He had been a vocal critic of militant Sikh separatists, who have frequently resorted to violence in their crusade for an independent homeland in India.
“We cannot stop our eyes from weeping,” Hayer’s daughter, Rupinder Hayer Bains, said.
Police had no suspects.
