McEnroe Is Master of Seniors Tour

John McEnroe won his fifth tournament in a row with a masterful 7-5, 6-3 victory over Yannick Noah in the ATP Seniors on Sunday at London.

Hitting winners from all parts of the court, the 39-year-old three-time Wimbledon titlist won his eighth championship of the year on the Seniors tour. He had previously clinched the series.

“Once I got going, things really picked up. I felt good,” McEnroe said. “It’s coming back.

“My goal is to be the George Foreman of tennis. He won the world title at 45. That gives me five years to get ready for Wimbledon.”

McEnroe said his commentating commitments to NBC and the USA network would probably prevent him from playing again in the doubles at Wimbledon although there had been suggestions that he might team with Steffi Graf in the mixed competition.

The International Tennis Federation is studying ways to create more interest in the Davis Cup among players and fans, ITF President Brian Tobin said Sunday.

Proposals include cutting matches in early rounds from best-of-five sets to best-of-three, giving the returning finalist nations first-round byes, and trying to convince the ATP to award rankings points for Davis Cup matches.

“Does that get [Pete] Sampras or whoever to play? Believe me, we are looking at the options,” said Tobin while in Milan, Italy, for the Davis Cup final between Sweden and Italy. Sweden wrapped up 4-1 victory Sunday, splitting the last two singles matches.
