The First Baptist Church will ask the Planning Commission today for an extension to build its permanent homeless shelter, saying the money for the project is coming in slower than expected.
The permit to complete the 52-bed shelter ends Dec. 31, but the Rev. Drake Wiley is seeking a one-year extension. The Planning Commission meeting, which begins at 7 p.m., will be at 6650 Beach Blvd.
In the meantime, the city agreed Tuesday to allow the church more time to meet safety requirements for a temporary shelter. The city could have required the church to close its enclosed patio shelter, where 52 people sleep, because it missed the deadline. Instead, officials decided to give the church until Dec. 22 to make the improvements. The church installed a new alarm and replaced windows, but it missed Tuesday’s deadline requiring it to install a sprinkler system.
