Turpin Kick-Starts Simi Valley to 76-28 Victory Over Pomona Garey

Annemarie Turpin scored eight of her 24 points in the first minute of Simi Valley High’s 76-28 victory over Pomona Garey on Tuesday in the first round of the St. Lucy’s tournament.
Turpin made two three-point baskets and a layup to give Simi Valley (3-0) an 8-0 lead. She added seven rebounds and five steals.
Freshman Teresa Cooper had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, ranked ninth in The Times’ regional poll, and freshman Mikali Bender added 10 points.
Crescenta Valley 65, Canyon 41--Junior Kristie Umemoto hit all five of her three-point shots and scored 21 of her 26 points in the first half of the Falcons’ nonleague victory at Crescenta Valley.
The Falcons (5-0) led by 26 points at halftime.
Moorpark 77, St. Bonaventure 34--Damaris Hinojosa scored 25 points and had 10 steals, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for the Musketeers, ranked No. 8 in the region by the Times, in a pool-play victory in the Gold Coast tournament at Rio Mesa High.
Kelly Geis and Kristen Nadas each added 12 points for Moorpark (2-0). Stacy Howard led St. Bonaventure with 17 points.
Cleveland 52, Sylmar 36--Cheyenne Brashear had 21 points and nine steals, and Mishawn Simms added 13 points and seven steals for Cavaliers (3-2) in a nonconference victory at Sylmar.
Michelle Jimenez had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Sylmar (0-2).
Chatsworth 65, Poly 13--Freshman Liz Sun scored 13 of her 19 points in the second quarter in the Chancellors’ nonleague game at Chatsworth.
The Chancellors (6-0) are off to a fast start under first-year Coach Raquel Ralotis after going 3-20 last season.
Sherman Oaks CES 33, Canoga Park 29--Erika Ephriam scored 12 of her 17 points in the first half for the Knights in a victory at Sherman Oaks CES.
Ephraim had nine steals for Sherman Oaks CES (1-0).
Taft 43, Grant 39--The Toreadors (4-1) capitalized on the absence of Leslie Mui, the Lancers’ leading scorer, to win at Grant.
Mui, averaging 20 points a game for the Lancers (3-4), left the game in the second quarter after being poked in the eye. She finished with three points.
Denisha McCoy had 10 points, including two three-pointers, for Taft (4-1).
Littlerock 55, Village Christian 46--Jameka Taylor scored 13 points and the Lobos won a first-round game in the Valencia tournament.
Jennilee Greslie had 24 points for the Crusaders.
Paraclete 54, Notre Dame 50--Christine Lambert had 19 points and 11 of the Spirits’ 40 rebounds in a first-round victory at the Valencia tournament.
Erika Hernandez had 16 points, 14 rebounds and six steals for Paraclete (2-2), and Jackie Kolesar contributed 12 points, five steals and five assists.
Verdugo Hills 74, Hollywood 39--Maria Felix had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Dons in a Northern Conference victory at Hollywood.
Deyna Barnard added 24 points and seven assists for Verdugo Hills (2-2, 1-0).
Glendale 60, Santa Paula 44--Evette Petrossian scored 17 points and the Dynamiters won a first-round game in the Valencia tournament.
Valencia 57, Chaminade 31--Sophomore Valerie Pena scored 15 points and the Vikings won in the first round of their own tournament.
