Brea Olinda Edges Sonora at Edison Tournament

Jerett Skrifvars made two free throws with seven seconds left to secure Brea Olinda’s 62-58 victory over Sonora in an Edison International tournament first-round boys’ basketball game Tuesday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Neither team led by more than six points. With less than a minute remaining, , Sonora’s Kurtis Levine sank two three-pointers to tie the score, 58-58.

After Kyle Dodd made two free throws for the Wildcats, Sonora missed a shot on its next possession.

Skrifvars then was fouled and stepped to the line, making both free throws for the Wildcats (1-1).

In another tournament game:

Katella 59, Magnolia 48--Four Knights scored in double figures. Matt Tisthammer led with 16 points, Jim Troge and Robert Abercrombie had 12 apiece and Brandon Jordan scored 11.

In the Century boys’ basketball tournament:

Orange Lutheran 41, Century 34--Jason Whieldon scored 18 points, had nine rebounds and six assists to lead Orange Lutheran (3-1) in a pool-play victory. Dustin Smith added 12 points for the Lancers, who led, 25-13, at the half.

In the Darren Oliver boys’ basketball tournament:

Orange 74, Bolsa Grande 62--Tion Demeyers scored a game-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, as the Panthers (4-1) defeated the Matadors (4-1) at Fullerton High.

In Tournament of Champions boys’ basketball:

Mater Dei 74, Pasadena 55--Mike Bayer scored 22 points and Cedric Bozeman had 15 for Mater Dei in the second-round game. The Monarchs play Redondo Beach Redondo Union in a quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. today at Ocean View.

In the Downey Calvary Chapel girls’ basketball tournament:

Brethren Christian 47, Liberty Christian 14--Heather Spowart had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Brethren Christian (2-1). Teammate Sarah Muilenburg led all scorers with 12 points. Liberty Christian is 1-1.

In the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament:

Pacifica 53, Huntington Beach 42--Diana Barreras scored 28 points and Kristin Tompkins added 15 in the first-round victory for Pacifica (1-0).

In the Lady Barons Hoop Challenge girls’ basketball tournament:

Fountain Valley 46, Sonora 39--Natalie King scored 13 points and her sister Lindsay added 12 for Fountain Valley (2-1).

In the Santa Ana Valley girls’ basketball tournament:

Santa Ana Valley 61, Bolsa Grande 31--Raven Herbert scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds and Carina Martinez added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Valley (3-3). Debby Baeder led Bolsa Grande (2-4) with 16 points.

In the South Coast Classic girls’ basketball tournament:

El Toro 66, Esperanza 48--Behind the play of Gioconda Mendiola, who had 15 points and seven assists, and Giuliana Mendiola, who scored 18 points, the Chargers (2-0) won the second-round game at University.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Corona del Mar 36, Saddleback 34--Jennifer Dickson scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds for visiting Corona del Mar (1-1). Charlene Quan led Corona del Mar with 14 points.

Edison 61, Rosary 50--Denise Karcher had 18 points for Rosary (3-2), which was outscored, 21-9, in the first quarter.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 14, No. 9 Los Alamitos 6--Ashley and Amber Stachowski each scored five goals for host Capistrano Valley (4-2).

No. 8 Foothill 10, Edison 5--Daylene Coberly scored three goals and Janelle Coberly added two for host Foothill (1-1). Edison is 2-4.

Laguna Beach 8, Huntington Beach 7--Laura Case scored with 22 seconds remaining to give the Artists the victory. Teresa Codini led all scorers with five goals.

Long Beach Poly fell to 2-1.

Saddleback 11, Orange 9 (OT)--Henes Kanskas scored three of her eight goals in overtime to lead visiting Saddleback (1-0).

Tustin 6, Loara 4 (OT)--Evelyn Ditammasso and Tea Montalvo each scored in overtime to lead host Tustin (2-1). Montalvo led all scorers with three goals. Loara is 0-3.

University 6, El Dorado 5 (OT)--Hayley Sudeith led the Trojans (4-1) with three goals, and Jessica Hylton and Morgan Voeltz combined for three more.

University was trailing, 4-1, with five seconds remaining in the third quarter when the Trojans scored. By the end of the fourth quarter, the score was tied, 4-4, and then the Trojans took a 5-4 lead in the first overtime period.
