Coyotes Keep Streaking Along With 4-2 Victory
The Phoenix Coyotes are going in one direction, the Montreal Canadiens another. So the result of their game Wednesday night at Phoenix was predictable.
Jeremy Roenick and Keith Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist and Mike Sullivan scored a short-handed goal in the second period for the Coyotes, whose string of 14 games without a loss ended in Edmonton on Dec. 2. Phoenix is 14-1-3 in its last 18 games, 2-0-1 in its last three.
Montreal lost for the 10th time in 13 games.
“Our plan was to go out and start a new streak,” Roenick said. “We thought we should have won that game in Edmonton, so we didn’t let it set us back too much. We just kept rolling along.”
Colorado 2, N.Y. Rangers 1--Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg scored within a 98-second span of the third period at New York to extend their winning streak to five games while ending the Rangers’ five-game streak.
The Avalanche, which had trailed since the 1:29 mark of the second period when Mathieu Schneider scored for New York, continued a climb toward the top of the Northwest Division with a 13-7-1 record following an 0-4-1 start, the worst in franchise history.
Dallas 3, San Jose 3--In the fifth meeting between the teams this season, the Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit at Dallas.
Tony Hrkac’s power-play goal late in the second period capped Dallas’ comeback and improved its record against the Sharks to 3-1-1.
Darryl Sydor and Jere Lehtinen also scored with the man advantage for the Stars, 4-1-1 in their last six games and 9-2-2 at home this season. The Sharks are 1-6-3 in their last 10 games.
Florida 6, Ottawa 5--Ray Whitney scored the Panthers’ fifth power-play goal of the game, breaking a tie with 5:29 left for the victory at Sunrise, Fla.
The Panthers took a 4-0 lead in the first period, and led, 5-3, entering the third period. But Senator rookie Marian Hossa scored his first NHL goal and then assisted on a breakaway goal by Radek Bonk to tie the score at 5-5 with 8:17 left.
Chicago 3, Edmonton 1--Eric Daze scored two goals and Jocelyn Thibault made 24 saves, giving up only a fluke score that deflected off a teammate as the Blackhawks won at Chicago.
The victory was the fourth in five games for the Blackhawks. Edmonton’s season-longest winless streak was stretched to four games (0-3-1).
