Mater Dei Advances to Final, 70-58

Mike Bayer scored 18 points and had 17 rebounds to lead Mater Dei to a 70-58 victory over San Diego Horizon in a semifinal game of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High.

Sedric Bozeman scored 17 points. Imran Sufri hit a three-pointer to give the Monarchs a 34-28 halftime lead. Detric Watts scored 22 points for Horizon. Mater Dei plays Compton at 1:30 p.m. today at Ocean View. Mater Dei is 13-24.

In the Century Tournament:

San Clemente 70, Estancia 40--Mitch Pierce and Brian George each scored 17 points in the semifinal to lead San Clemente, which took a 40-16 halftime lead. Pierce had 10 rebounds and George had eight.

In the Darren Oliver boys’ basketball tournament:

Orange 55, Santa Ana 45--Santa Ana led throughout the first three quarters and Steve Miller had 27 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, as the Panthers pulled into the lead with three minutes left and ran away with a 55-45 pool play victory at Fullerton High.

In the Joe Ferguson Tournament:

Foothill 66, Mission Viejo 62--Chad Bigler and Alex Rasmussen made two consecutive three-pointers to extend Foothill’s lead to nine, 63-54. Rasmussen scored 23 points, including six three-pointers.

Savanna 77, Fullerton 52--Aipolo Boone had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Solomon Brown scored 23 points with eight assists to lead Savanna (5-2).

In the La Quinta boys’ basketball tournament:

Calvary Chapel 59, Huntington Beach 52--Brett Young had 29 points and J.J. Pangan added 12 to lead Calvary Chapel.

La Quinta 73, Santa Ana Valley 53--Chris Smith led with 27 points and William Chau had 14 for La Quinta, which will play Loara in the championship game tonight at 8 p.m.

Loara 61, Lakewood 40--Herbert Gracia scored 18 points to help Loara advance to tonight’s championship game. The Saxons led, 29-9, after one quarter.

Laguna Beach 72, Garden Grove 34--Kurt Beimfohr had 25 points and Travis Hanour added 16 to lead Laguna Beach (5-2) in the pool play tournament.

In Pasadena Poly basketball tournament:

San Marino 40, St. Margaret’s 31--Brian Sternberg scored 15 points for St. Margaret’s (0-4), which was outscored, 14-2, in the third quarter. San Marino is 5-1.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

El Dorado 59, Sunny Hills 36--Reserve Mike Carlson hit three three-pointers to lead El Dorado (3-3), which led, 20-0, in the first quarter. Carlson finished with 11 points.

Canyon 65, Servite 62--Neil Hammad led Canyon with 26 points. John Morris had 20 points and Evan Friedl had 18 for Servite.

Laguna Hills 59, Dana Hills 45--Josh Pierson scored 22 points, including six three-pointers, to lead Laguna Hills (4-2). Marshal Houser added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks.

Los Alamitos 56, Katella 55--Los Alamitos jumped to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter, but Katella rallied, outscoring the Griffins, 18-9, in the second quarter. Andrew Plieck had 13 points for Los Alamitos. Brandon Jordan scored 18 points and Matt Tisthammer added 14 to lead Katella.

Heritage Christian 53, Victor Valley Christian 51--Todd Warner had 18 points and eight rebounds and Brandon Newte had nine assists as visiting Heritage Christian (2-3) held off a late rally to win. Victor Valley Christian is 4-1.

Riverside Sherman Indian 71, Southern California Christian 62--Mike Bejach had 18 points and 24 rebounds to lead visiting SCC (0-4).
