Hirschfeld Posts $1 Million Bond
NEW YORK — Abe Hirschfeld, the eccentric New York millionaire charged with hiring a hit man to have a business partner killed, submitted a certified check for $1 million Monday to stay out of jail.
An indictment last week alleged that Hirschfeld tried two years ago to arrange the contract killing of Stanley Stahl, 73, his partner of 40 years.
Prosecutors said Hirschfeld had an intermediary deliver $75,000 in cash--half of an agreed-upon fee to kill Stahl, with whom he had been entangled in legal battles. The unidentified intermediary tipped off Stahl, who alerted authorities.
Hirschfeld, who offered Paula Corbin Jones $1 million to settle her sexual harassment lawsuit against President Clinton, has said the charges against him are lies and that he is the victim of a frame-up and had no reason to kill Stahl.
