Coyotes Rally for Tie, Extend Unbeaten Streak

Teppo Numminen scored with 1:53 left in the third period as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied twice in the final minutes for a 2-2 tie with the Canadiens on Monday night at Montreal.

The Coyotes lost scoring leader Keith Tkachuk, who suffered a groin injury in the third period. The seriousness of the injury was not known.

The Coyotes (17-3-4), first overall in the NHL, extended their unbeaten streak to five games.

St. Louis 0, Colorado 0--Patrick Roy of the Avalanche and the Blues’ Grant Fuhr put on flawless performances in a scoreless tie at Denver. Roy had 32 saves, Fuhr 22.

Roy, who was involved in a scoreless tie Nov. 2, 1996, against Buffalo’s Dominik Hasek, recorded his 43rd career shutout and second of the season.

Playing his second game after coming back from an injured groin, Fuhr gained his 24th shutout and first against the Colorado franchise.

New York Rangers 5, Calgary 2--Marc Savard and Adam Graves scored power-play goals in the first period and the Rangers went on to a victory over the Flames at New York.

The Rangers also got another power-play goal from Petr Nedved in the third period, as they converted three of five chances with the man advantage to end a two-game losing streak.

The Flames went 0 for 6 on the power play.

NHL Notes

Over the objection of some creditors, the Pittsburgh Penguins were given permission Monday by a federal bankruptcy judge to borrow $20 million from a French bank. The loan will allow the Penguins to meet their payroll and to remain in business until the start of the 1999-2000 season.
