3pm: Nature Walk

Teachers from the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro will lead a tide pool walk through Point Fermin Marine Life Refuge. After an introductory slide show at the aquarium, it’s off to the beach to observe and identify sea urchins, anemones, hermit crabs and feather-boa kelp. Kids have to be accompanied by an adult, and nonslip shoes and outdoor clothes are recommended.

Favorite carols and seasonal classics make up the program when the Pacific Chorale gives its annual holiday concert, this year called “ ‘Tis the Season,” in Segerstrom Hall. John Alexander conducts the 140-voice chorale, members of the Pacific Symphony and the Pacific Chorale Children’s Chorus.

Ancient West Mexico, an area that includes the present-day Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima, is a region that only recently has been recognized as having been a major cultural center between 200 BC and AD 800. “Ancient West Mexico, Art of the Unknown Region,” organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and opening Sunday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, showcases more than 200 pieces of Mesoamerican pottery, including human figures, animals and plants, vessels and models of houses, ball games, ritual scenes and ceremonial centers.
