Some broadcast and cable programs contain material included in the public school curriculum and on standardized examinations. Here are some weekend home-viewing tips:

* Today--”Living History” (KLCS, 6:30-7 p.m.). This episode of the documentary series “California’s Gold” includes historical reenactments of events that occurred at Fort Ross, headquarters of Russian military operations in Northern California 1812-1841. VCR+80765. Also, “Who Was Moses” (DISCOVERY, 9-10 p.m.). This BBC documentary examining the latest archeological evidence related to the Book of Exodus provides background useful in connection with viewing the newly released animated movie version of the story. VCR+440765. See also “Moses and the Ten Commandments,” an episode in the “Biography” series Friday on A&E; from 5-6 p.m. and repeating from 9-10 p.m. VCR+612609.

* Friday--”Claws: Crabs and Lobsters” (DISCOVERY, 8-9 p.m.). This is a documentary on the evolution and survival techniques of various crustaceans. VCR+949383. Also, “Porgy and Bess: An American Voice” (KCET 9:30-11 p.m.). This documentary on the great American opera includes interviews with and performances by Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry and William Warfield. VCR+180857.

* Saturday--”San Fernando Mission--200th Birthday” (CITY, noon-12:30 p.m. and repeating from 4-4:30 p.m.). This is a documentary covering the three-day celebration of the founding of the Valley’s mission. VCR+2797. Also, “A Christmas Carol” (KTLA, 3-5 p.m.). This is a well-regarded movie version of the Charles Dickens novel. George C. Scott stars. VCR+ 99722. Available on video. Also, “Bah! Humbug!” (KCET, 6-7). This documentary explores the historical background of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Robert McNeil hosts. VCR+67432.

* Sunday--”Sperm Whales: The Real Moby Dick” (KCET, 8-9 p.m.). In this PBS “Nature” documentary, new technology is utilized to study sperm whales, the elusive breed of sea creature that inspired Herman Melville’s classic novel. VCR+81662.
