4.1 Quake Rattles Mammoth Area; Third Temblor in 5 Days
The third moderate earthquake in the last five days shook an Eastern Sierra area 13 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes early Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The magnitude 4.1 temblor, which occurred at 2:32 a.m., caused no damage or injuries.
Scientists said it was the latest seismic event in a sequence going back to a 5.1 temblor that hit the same area July 14. The three quakes that struck late Sunday and early Thursday were all within the July 14 quake’s aftershock zone.
The latest quakes are in a mountainous region well away from the Mammoth ski area.
