Cypress College has been awarded an $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, enabling educators to study environmental issues, municipal utilities, public safety and transportation via a high-tech database management system.

Geographic Information Systems, a field of study developed by the college, uses specialized computer software to analyze and view data in a graphic display. The two-year grant will allow 120 faculty members to be trained in GIS at summer workshops in 1999 and 2000 at Cypress College, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Ulster College in upstate New York.
