Loara Boys Get Past University
Tony Cuellar scored eight minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie and give Loara a 1-0 victory over University in the second round of the Marina boys’ soccer tournament Monday.
Loara (4-3-1) advances to the quarterfinals against Santa Barbara San Marcos. In a first-round game, Cuellar scored two goals to help Loara to a 3-0 victory over San Clemente.
In other tournament games:
Fountain Valley 3, Ocean View 0--Cliff McKinley scored two goals and Chris Wimmer had the other for Fountain Valley (10-1). McKinley and Wimmer also scored in an earlier 2-0 victory over Ventura Buena.
San Clemente 2, West Torrance 1--Kevin Jordan scored on a header with a minute left to break a 1-1 tie and clinch the victory for the Tritons (5-3-4) in a consolation game.
Matt Wiechert scored in the first half to give San Clemente the lead, but Mark Anderson tied it for West Torrance (4-6-1) with 10 minutes remaining of the second half.
In the Trabuco Hills Mustang Invitational:
Capistrano Valley 1, Sunny Hills 0--Tim Fallman scored late in the second half and Matt Guzzetta made two saves to lead Capistrano Valley. Ashley Hendrey made 13 saves for Sunny Hills.
Laguna Beach 1, Edison 1 (Laguna Beach advances on penalty kicks, 3-1)--Tom Neptune scored for Laguna Beach in the first half, but Edison’s Weston Langdon scored in the second half. Laguna Beach’s Ryan Buist and Edison’s Joey Balbas each made five saves.
Mission Viejo 1, Villa Park 0--Will Beard scored in the second half for Mission Viejo.
Santa Ana 2, Edison 1--Carlos Nava and Jose Najera scored second-half goals for Santa Ana. Devin Kato scored for the Chargers in the first half.
Trabuco Hills 3, El Toro 0--Kit Hager, Peter Padayachee and Kevin Biggs scored for Trabuco Hills (6-4-2) in the first half.
Woodbridge 1, Aliso Niguel 0--Roy Chingirian scored from 18 yards in the 40th minute. Woodbridge (8-0) also defeated El Modena, 2-1, in another game.
In the Lompoc tournament:
Servite 1, Cabrillo 0--Senior Matt Terry scored off an assist by Brian Reed early in the second half for Servite (10-3-1).
In the Excalibur girls’ soccer tournament:
Fountain Valley 2, Canyon 1--Julie Scheppele and Melody Manqrello scored first-half goals for Fountain Valley. Laurie Perkins made four saves and Amanda Bell made one in the Barons’ first-round victory.
El Modena 1, Newport Harbor 0--Candice Williams broke a scoreless tie in the second half with a goal assisted by Vicki Bloom. Goalkeeper Jackie James made eight saves to shut out the Sailors.
Esperanza 1, Dana Hills 0--Jill Jermain scored in the second half for the Aztecs. Goalkeeper Kristin Skinner made five saves.
Los Alamitos 1, Santa Margarita 0--Monique Gillaspie scored in the first half off an assist from Kristi Bissonnette. Goalkeeper Ashley DeAlejandro made six saves.
Glendora St. Lucy’s 2, El Toro 0--Jenn Sousa and Cindy Williams scored second-half goals and goalkeeper Cassandra Criscioine made nine saves for St. Lucy’s.
