Fullerton Escapes With Victory Against Mesa
San Diego Mesa’s Liz Quintard missed a shot at the buzzer and Fullerton held on for a 60-58 semifinal victory in the Fullerton women’s basketball tournament Tuesday.
Cheranny Lindsay made one of two free throws to give Fullerton a 60-58 lead with four seconds left. Fullerton took a one-point lead with a minute to go, but missed four free throws.
Teresa Manning scored 18 points and Lindsay and Chris Payne each scored 12 to lead Fullerton (9-6), which trailed by two at halftime. Rebecca Clayton and PreShice Carter each scored 17 points for San Diego Mesa (13-4).
In the Grossmont tournament:
Cypress 85, Compton 39--Angela Garrett scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Chargers (6-9). Teammate Sharee Brown had 20 points and Erica McCraney scored 17 points and had six steals. Antares Vice scored 14 points.
Golden West 58, Grossmont 50--Grossmont’s Kim Erlenwein made a three-pointer to open the second half to break a 27-27 tie, but Golden West went on a 10-0 run to take a 37-30 lead. Grossmont came within four points, but couldn’t close after that. Tracy Downs scored 20 points and had nine rebounds and Kelly Medlen scored 17 for the Rustlers (5-9).
In the Hancock men’s basketball tournament:
Chaffey 88, Cypress 78--Chris Killens scored a team-high 26 points and had five assists to lead the Chargers. Meko Parker had 19 points and five assists. Jarran Parker had 13 points and Ryan Tenpass had 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Larry Singletary had 31 points and nine rebounds for Chaffey.
Cuesta 76, Irvine Valley 68--Irvine Valley was outscored by six in the second half. Ben Esplin scored 17 points for the Lasers (12-4).
In the Santa Ana tournament:
Saddleback 82, Skagit Valley (Wash.) 66--Andre Jackson had 25 points and 20 rebounds for the Gauchos (9-6).
