Combs Sets Mark as Esperanza Tops Ocean View

Esperanza’s Leah Combs set the school career scoring record with four points in a 57-43 victory at home over Ocean View in a nonleague girls’ basketball game.

Combs, who has 1,202 points, previously was tied with Lindsay Foss (1994-96), who had 1,198 points.

Kim Omer also set a school record for second-ranked Esperanza (16-6), making five three-pointers in the game. Omer finished with 26 points.

Anna Lembke led Ocean View (10-12) with 20 points.

In other nonleague games:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 80, Santa Barbara 54--Brea Olinda trailed after the first quarter, 11-9, and went on a 14-0 run to open the second. Lindsey Davidson scored 18 points and had six assists and four steals for the Ladycats (20-1).

Sophomore Chelsea Trotter scored 21 points and had nine rebounds for Brea Olinda.

La Crescenta Crescenta Valley 68, No. 3 Capistrano Valley 59--All-American guard Michelle Greco had 34 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Crescenta Valley (18-2), the top-ranked team in Division I-AA.

Monique Mathews had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Capistrano Valley, which beat Mater Dei, 51-39, Friday night for its eighth consecutive victory.

Capistrano Valley (18-4) is ranked sixth in Division I-AA.

No. 9 El Toro 62, Century 50--Giuliana Mendiola scored 29 points and her sister Gioconda had 19 for El Toro (21-2), which led at the half, 28-15. Century (14-8) was led by Aprile Powell with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

In the Katella girls’ water polo tournament:

No. 9 Esperanza 7, Katella 5--Andrea Griffith scored three goals as Esperanza won the tournament title. Kim Steele added two goals for the Aztecs (16-5).

Katella (14-7) was led by Julia Avila with two goals. In an earlier game, Josie Hoien and Devon Wright each scored two goals in Katella’s 7-2 pool-play victory over El Toro.

In the Laguna Hills wrestling invitational:

Laguna Hills wins--Laguna Hills took first place in the team event with 157 points. Diamond Bar (147) finished second and Chino Hills Ayala (139) was third.

In the individual events, Brian Simmons of Laguna Hills dominated the 154-pound division by recording four pins in four matches. Simmons pinned David Molano of Long Beach Millikan in 1:20 to win the title.
