Universal Studios has appointed Louis Feola, president of the home video division, to head a new group charged with developing direct-to-video and family TV fare. As president of Universal Family & Home Entertainment Production, Feola will also oversee Universal Cartoon Studios and acquisitions for video distribution for the studio.
The move highlights the increasing importance of the direct-to-video market. Universal’s four animated “Land Before Time” sequels combined have sold an estimated 16 million copies, according to Tonya Bates, general manager of Videoscan.
Feola has not previously held a creative position, but he has been closely involved in the development of Universal’s direct-to-video product.
