Applications Sought for HIV Committee

The City Council is seeking applications until Feb. 25 from residents who wish to serve on the HIV Advisory Committee.

The seven-member committee, the only one of its kind in Orange County, is undergoing some changes in direction because the focus of the AIDS crisis has shifted. Originally formed a decade ago to promote awareness about the disease, the HIV committee now wants to focus on job retraining. It also wants to provide counseling for AIDS patients who, because of advances in medicine, are living longer than they ever imagined and learning to manage a long-term illness.

City officials are searching for a broad spectrum of community members to serve on the committee, including members of the clergy and people with HIV.

Four members of the committee will serve two-year terms and the remaining three members will serve one-year terms. The terms begin March 1.
